Around 300 people gathered at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh on 26 February 2004 to discuss issues ranging from whether vending machines in schools should be banned to whether labelling can help people make healthy eating decisions to whether a ban on TV advertising would reduce the level of 'junk' food consumed by children.
As well as questions from the audience, people watching on the webcast and digital TV sent questions in via email and text.
Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care, Tom McCabe, welcomed the move to improve the nation's diet in a short speech before the start of the debate.
Around two-thirds of the audience, using interactive voting pads, placed the main responsibility for children's diets at the feet of parents.
But most of the Assembly Rooms audience felt that education in school and at home is vital in teaching children what constitutes a balanced diet and felt that parents needed to be given more advice on healthy eating for children.
