Bird flu

On the basis of current scientific evidence, the Food Standards Agency advice is that avian (bird) flu does not pose a food safety risk for UK consumers.

The Agency has thoroughly assessed the available evidence to establish its advice. This includes seeking the views of the independent Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF). The Agency's advice is supported by what's being issued by worldwide bodies such as the European Food Safety Agency and World Health Organization.

The FSA asked the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF), which provides independent expert advice to Government on questions relating to microbiology and food, to consider recent developments since it last discussed avian, or bird, flu in 2003.
