Application of Article 5 of Council Regulation (EC) No 2991/94 laying down standards for spreadable fats

Wednesday 21 August 2002

Regulation (EC) No 2991/94 defines under Article 5 when terms such as ‘reduced-fat’, ‘low-fat’ or ‘light’ can be used to label spreadable fats. At the time of adoption it was agreed to review the use of these terms within five years, on the basis of a report to be compiled by the European Commission.

This recently received report is based on the results of a questionnaire circulated by the Commission, to which the UK and several other Member States responded. The UK response took account of comments received as a result of a public consultation held during the period of 15 November 2000 to 3 January 2001.
