May 2007 update on spreadable fats

Thursday 10 May 2007

The European Commission has consolidated Commission Regulation (EC) No 577/97 (as amended) setting detailed requirements for reporting fat content on spreadable fats and the use of the description 'butter' for composite products such as Brandy Butter.

There is no change to legal requirements, but UK legislation will need to be updated to reflect the new European legislation. As there is no change to legal requirements, the FSA does not intend to hold a full formal consultation on the draft UK SI or produce a Regulatory Impact Assessment. However, should interested parties feel that this amendment will result in a significant change requiring a full consultation, the Agency would welcome comments and evidence by 23 May.
