What is RSS?The MHS Board and MHS workforce protect public health and animal welfare in approved premises in Britain. The functions of the MHS Board, a sub-committee of the FSA Board, are to give strategic direction to the MHS within the overall strategy agreed by the FSA Board; and to set appropriate targets for the MHS and monitor its performance and hold it to account on behalf of the FSA Board.
The MHS operational workforce consists of around 1,400 full-time employess and contracted staff in the 'front-line' meat inspection teams located in approved fresh meat premises throughout Britain. In addition, the MHS employs around 150 administrative and managerial staff at its headquarters in York.
The Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) protects public health and animal health and welfare in Britain by providing verification, audit, and meat inspection services in approved fresh meat premises on demand, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
This framework document sets out the accountability and governance arrangements between the FSA and the MHS and replaces the one published when the MHS was first established as an executive agency.
