Meat Hygiene Service Board

The functions of the MHS Board, a sub-committee of the FSA Board, are to give strategic direction to the MHS within the overall strategy agreed by the FSA Board; and to set appropriate targets for the MHS and monitor its performance and hold it to account on behalf of the FSA Board.

The MHS workforce

In 2008, the Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) underwent a change programme to improve its operational structure. This included strengthening MHS service through improved management of resources by grouping fresh meat premises into 37 clearly defined geographical areas known as ‘clusters’. The improved operational structure aims to be more effective, efficient and responsive.

What the MHS do in approved premises

The Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) protects public health and animal health and welfare in Britain by providing verification, audit, and meat inspection services in approved fresh meat premises on demand, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
