A review of the Food Standards Agency's meat establishment approval programme for the United Kingdom was carried out between October and December 2008.
The review was requested by the Chief Executive following a FSA Board discussion of a paper at its September 2008 meeting on the programme of approval of meat plants.
The review considered the approval policies and the implementation of the approvals programme in the UK and investigated the 'apparent inconsistency of approach, particularly between Wales and England'.
The report of the review was accepted by FSA Directors and the Chief Executive updated the FSA Board on the findings of the review at the 10 February 2009 Board Meeting.
Corrective actions to address the report recommendations have been taken by the Agency’s Hygiene and Microbiology Division, with further measures to be agreed by the Approvals Project Board.
