Spar UK Ltd withdraws two of its own-brand frozen meals due to a distribution error

Wednesday 18 May 2005

Food Alert: for Information

Ref: 32/2005

Spar UK Ltd has recalled two of its own-brand frozen meals due to them being quarantined stock that was inadvertently redistributed.

The products had been subject to a recall during the Sudan I incident in February 2005 as they had incorporated Worcester sauce that had been contaminated with Sudan I. On 18 February 2005 the products, frozen Spaghetti Bolognese and frozen Shepherds Pie, were included on the list of affected products published by the Agency.

As a result of the initial recall, these products were returned to the central distribution depot used by the manufacturers of the products for Spar UK Ltd. It is from this depot that the products have been inadvertently redistributed. As soon as Spar UK Ltd. became aware of this error, it instigated a product withdrawal. In addition, point-of-sale notices are to be displayed in the Spar stores that received the products, in order to make consumers aware of the withdrawal.

The products recalled are:
Spar Shepherds Pie 340g best before dates Aug 05 to Feb 06 inclusive
Spar Spaghetti Bolognese 300g best before dates July 05 to Feb 06 inclusive

No other Spar products are known to be affected

A copy of the notice issued by Spar UK Ltd to be displayed in store is attached to this Food Alert.
