Several local authorities have received complaints about pasteurised milk from Longslow Dairy, Colwyn Bay, Wales. The nature of the complaints being that the milk had soured within its given shelf life.
There appears to have been an intermittent fault which has tainted a small percentage of production.
Microbiological and chemical testing has shown that this is a quality issue rather than a health risk.
The product has primarily been on sale in the larger supermarkets throughout mid and north Wales as well as the north-west of England. It has also been distributed to small, localised outlets. The product has not been distributed to or within Scotland.
Product affected
Semi-skimmed and whole pasteurised milk sold in various sized plastic containers with various use by codes up to and including 23 Oct 2004.
Identification
The labels are identified as Longslow Dairy Group, Lancashire Dairies, Spar, or Cowbelle. They all bear the health mark UK CW001 EEC.
Actions to be taken by local authorities
The product does not comply with the food safety requirements specified in the Food Safety Act 1990.
Although the company has undertaken a trade withdrawal there remains a possibility that the product may still be in consumers homes.
Local authorities are therefore asked to consider providing local publicity at the next available opportunity to this issue.
