Tuesday 3 August 2004

Category D: For information only

Ref: 29/2004 (Update 1) (England): D30 Update 1/2004 (Scotland)

Food Hazard Warning 29/2004, issued on 12 July 2004, advised that Epicure Beans in Chilli Sauce had been found to be contaminated with the illegal dye Sudan I. As a result of information received from Petty Wood & Co Ltd., and Vegetarian World it has now been confirmed that another batch of the product is affected.

Product affected:
Epicure Beans in Chilli Sauce, sold in 410g tins, with a 'best before end' date of Febraury 2007 and batch code ECB5064.

Petty Wood & Co Ltd., included this batch code as a precautionary measure in their Product Recall notice dated 12 July 2004.

To assist local authorities in correct identification of this product, pictures can be viewed from the link at the foot of this page.

The product presents a health risk if consumed in sufficient quantity, and does not comply with the food safety requirements specified in the Food Safety Act 1990 due to contamination with Sudan I. In addition, Sudan I is not a permitted colour.

Petty Wood & Co Ltd. has undertaken a trade withdrawal, and it is unlikely that the affected product is still on sale.
