Brain Licker brand of novelty liquid sweets

Monday 22 September 2003

Category D: For information only

In May this year the Food Standards Agency issued a food hazard warning to inform consumers about a possible risk to children from Brain Licker, a liquid novelty sweet. There had been several complaints to local authorities that suggest that children may have suffered burns to their mouths from them.

Investigations into these products and the reasons for the reported problems have now been completed by the Agency.

The manufacturer in Spain has advised the Agency that they have reduced the pH of the content considerably from the original levels in the batches that were the subject of complaint. In addition the Spanish authorities are content that the product is safe for human consumption and that the roller ball dispenser has been tested and approved by the authorities in Spain.
The product is now back in distribution within the UK and none of the original stock should be on retail sale.

If any local authority does receive complaints about this product that can be substantiated they should advise the Agency immediately.
