Contamination with Sudan I dye of various meat preparations produced by Khan Quality Foods

Friday 3 October 2003

Category C: For action as deemed necessary

Heads of environmental health services and directors of trading standards will wish to be aware that various frozen meat preparations produced by Khan Quality Foods have been found to be contaminated with the illegal dye, Sudan I.

Sudan I is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose.

The products have been on sale throughout Lancashire, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Leicestershire and London in small local retail outlets.

The company has undertaken a trade withdrawal effective from 25 September 2003 of all the affected products below:

KQF Fiesta Chicken Sausage
KQF Fiesta Lamb Sausage
KQF Fiesta Beef Sausage
KQF Spicy Beef Kebabs
KQF Spicy Beef Lollies
KQF Spicy Lamb Lollies
KQF Spicy Chicken Lollies
KQF Spicy Lamb Kofta
KQF Spicy Chicken Kofta
Mr Spicy Chicken Kebabs
Mr Spicy Lamb Kebabs

Only products with Best Before Dates between, and including, 01/06/04 and 25/09/04 are affected.

No other Khan Quality Foods products are known to be affected.

Identification of the product.

All the above products are either packed in white polystyrene trays over-wrapped with clear plastic and a label applied to the surface, or a plastic bag heat-sealed at either end with the product description on the front.

To assist local authorities in correct identification of this product, pictures of the products can be viewed at the links below

Actions to be taken by local authorities:

The product presents a health risk if consumed in sufficient quantity, and does not comply with the food safety requirements specified in the Food Safety Act 1990 due to contamination with Sudan I. In addition, Sudan I is not a permitted colour.

It is believed that the trade withdrawal has been effective and that it is unlikely that any affected product remains on sale. If any of these products with a Best Before Date between 01/06/04 and 25/09/04 are found on sale within their area, enforcement officers should ensure that they are withdrawn from sale and destroyed, if necessary using the powers of the Food Safety Act.

Because the company has not issued any press release or point of sale notices in retail outlets, there is the possibility that unused affected products remain in consumers home. Local Authorities are, therefore, asked to consider providing local publicity at the next available opportunity to this issue. For that purpose local authorities may wish to refer to the Food Standards Agency’s press release (see link below) as a guide to what to say in any local news release.
