Heads of environmental health services and directors of trading standards will wish to be aware of a product recall by Spar (UK) Ltd of Chilli Con Carne in 392g cans, due to contamination of one of the ingredients with the illegal dye Sudan I. The product was manufactured by Glenbrook Foods Ltd, Portadown, Craigavon Northern Ireland.
Sudan I is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose.
The product recalled is:
Spar Chilli Con Carne 392g
The batch known to be affected is:
Best Before End Jun 06
3168 SCT
No other Spar products are known to be affected
Spar (UK) Ltd will be issuing a product recall notice in the national newspapers from 11 October 2003.

Following routine testing, a batch of SPAR Canned Chilli Con Carne was found to be below our usual high standards. We have therefore decided to withdraw the entire batch.
The affected product bears the code BBE JUN 06 3168 SCT
Customers who purchased SPAR Canned Chilli Con Carne bearing the above code should return it to the SPAR store from which it was purchased, where they will be given a full refund or replacement. Only products bearing the above code are affected.
