High Levels of Patulin in Bramley Apple Juice

Friday 15 March 2002

Category B: For Action

Heads of Environmental Health Services/Directors of Trading Standards will wish to be aware that the Food Standards Agency is currently undertaking a survey to measure levels of patulin and alternaria toxins in apple juices and apple products. High levels of patulin (i.e. 78.8 micrograms per kilogram) have been found in the following product:

Product Description:

Product: Fresh Dry Bramley Apple Juice
Brand Name: James White
Size of bottle: 75cl glass bottles
Best Before Date: Sept-03
Batch code: SEP03D
Supplier: James White Drinks Ltd, Ashbocking, Ipswich

The level of patulin in this product significantly exceeds the UK advisory limit of 50ug/kg (set by the Food Advisory Committee).

Patulin is natural contaminant occurring mainly in apples and apple products. It has been linked to a range of adverse effects in experiments on animals (is a mutagen, immunotoxic and causes effects in the developing foetus). Although there is no evidence of any adverse effects in humans attributable to ingestion of this toxin, expert advice recommends that the level of patulin in foodstuffs is kept as low as possible. The Food Standards Agency's advice, therefore, is that the above product should not be consumed, and should be withdrawn from sale and destroyed.

Action to be taken by local authorities:

James White Drinks Ltd has provided a list of premises (see attached annex) supplied with the above product. Local authorities should identify premises in their area from the list, and contact these premises and ensure that all of the above product with code SEP03D has been withdrawn from sale and destroyed.

Action taken by the Food Standards Agency:

The FSA will shortly be issuing a press release which will be available on the FSA website.

Additional Information:

It appears that when this batch of apple juice was produced the company was called 'The Suffolk Apple Juice and Cider Company.' There were no company details or address on the bottle, only the brand name James White.

The company also traded under the name of James White and is about to change its name to James White Drinks Ltd.

The Trading Standards authority liaising with James White Drinks Ltd on this issue is Suffolk County Council, and the officer who may be contacted is Dave Pearsons on 01473 584398.

The officer dealing with this hazard is: Sue Johns 020 7276 8712
