POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS - WITHDRAWAL OF TWO BRANDS OF OLIVE-POMACE OIL
Heads of Environmental Health Services and Directors of Trading Standards will wish to be aware of the withdrawal of two brands of olive-pomace oil from Italy due to high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Specifically, high levels of benzo(a)pyrene and benz(a)anthracene have been found in the following products:

Level of benzo(a)pyrene: 6.1ppb
Level of benz(a)anthracene: 15.1ppb
Country of Origin: Italy
Importer: C & T Licata & Son, 36 Picton Street, Montpelier, Bristol
Product Name: Roma Olive-Pomace Oil
Lot Identification: L 177M
Best Before Date: 01/2003
Product Description: Olive-Pomace Oil packed in a 5 litre tin
Manufacturer: Trasimeno S.P.A.
Level of benzo(a)pyrene: 16.8 ppb
Level of benz(a)anthracene: 21.8 ppb
Country of Origin: Italy

Additional Information: In the case of the Tempio Olive-Pomace Oil, the product has been withdrawn from sale and the remaining stock will be returned to the supplier. In the case of the Roma Olive-Pomace Oil, the product has been withdrawn from sale and customers advised to return any remaining stock to the UK supplier.
