The UK Government is committed to integrating sustainable development principles into all of its activities and policies.
All Government departments are required to take this work forward.
In May 1999, the Government published its original strategy on sustainable development in the White Paper 'A better quality of life'.
Since then, there has been a major review of this strategy to give a renewed impetus to sustainable development in Government.
The result of this was the Sustainable Development Strategy 'Securing the Future'. This was published in March 2005.
Challenging targets have been set for all Government Departments on overarching commitments, travel, water, waste, energy, procurement, estates management, biodiversity and social impacts.
All departments have a significant contribution to make, not just through their policies and services, but through the support activities that go on every day.
Decisions about energy, water and waste management and the goods and services that Departments buy, say a great deal about the Government's commitment to sustainable development.
The Framework for Sustainable Development on the Government Estate provides a structured approach to identifying and reporting the key sustainable development impacts of departments through the management of their estate, employment of staff and external relations with communities in which they operate.
It sets out a common agenda and priorities, agreed by all Departments.
